The University of California, US, is the subject of a lawsuit filed on Monday, alleging that the enrollment process for the common school system is discriminatory. The problem, submitted in a federal district court in California, claims that the school gives unjust desire to Black and Hispanic candidates, violating antidiscrimination rules.
Students Against Racial Discrimination, a team representing White and Asian individuals, filed the lawsuit because they believe the enrollment process should take into account competition. The organization demands that the university’s laws change in line with national antidiscrimination legislation, the 14th Amendment, and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which forbids racial bias against organizations that receive federal funding. If effective, the lawsuit may reduce the school from considering or asking about an individual’s competition during admissions.
The University of California responded that racial and ethnic information gathered for undergraduate programs is” for statistical purposes only and they are not used for registration.” Additionally, according to the school, Proposition 209, which forbids affirmative action in California, has been changed in its admissions procedures.
This petition comes after the US Supreme Court’s June 2023 ruling overturning affirmative action in university admissions at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. Additionally, it comes at a time when some businesses are phasing out diversity activities, which have been criticized by traditional leaders and US president Donald Trump.
Students Against Racial Discrimination, founded in 2024, said that its purpose is to “restore democracy in education” and oppose enrollment laws that prioritize variety over educational requirements.
The complaint claims that the University of California uses a “holistic” enrollment approach, similar to a technique first implemented at UCLA, to minimize differences in attendance rates between Black, Hispanic, and other applicants.
The nine University of California schools, including the very careful UCLA and UC Berkeley, have been told not to take race into account when making admissions choices.
The University of California program, according to the plaintiffs, spent hundreds of millions of dollars to improve the access for students from commercially underprivileged backgrounds from high school to college in the years that followed the election. This initiative resulted in a rise in Black and Hispanic applications and enrollees.
