President Donald Trump‘s day was capped by meetings with governors from opposing political parties, which aides said showed his fervor for working with governors from across the hall.
During Wednesday’s presentation, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described Abbott “as a great friend and ally to the president, ” who has been “on the top lines of the border crisis in this country. ”
“As for Gov. Gavin Newsom, also, the leader is willing to work with anyone from blue states or dark claims to perform what’s best for the American people, ” Leavitt told reporters.
The Abbott and Newsom meetings, according to California Democratic planner Garry South, represented “a general strange pair if there ever was one.” ”
“California and Texas are the biggest and second-biggest says in people, so it makes some sense in that respect, ” South told the Washington Examiner. “
Claremont McKenna College politicians professor and former Republican planner John Pitney agreed, arguing, “For all his rhetoric, Trump never ignore California entirely. ”
“Although it is strongly Democratic, six million Californians voted for him last year, ” Pitney told the Washington Examiner. Issues like disaster response are a concern for Republican celebrities and battle contributors. The Pacific Palisades flames burned a house belonging to one of Trump’s Hollywood diplomats, Mel Gibson. ”
The Pacific Palisades blaze was one of 17 fire that, as of the end of last month, had killed at least 29 people, forced more than 200,000 people to evacuate, and destroyed or damaged more than 18,000 houses or buildings.
Trump has criticized Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their handling of the flames, including their water procedures, which he claims deprived Southeastern California of the resources it needed to expel after complaints that some extinguishers were clean. Yet the president signed an executive order underscoring that” the United States ‘ plan is to provide Southern California with essential water resources, notwithstanding constantly dangerous State or local laws. ”
According to Pitney, consulting with the government can stop embarrassing events like the release of 2 billion gallons of water next week. Nearly 200 kilometers from the Los Angeles fireplace area, there is no water that came, and the majority of it will end up being wasted. ”
Costas Panagopoulos, a professor of political science at Northeastern University, downplayed Trump’s visible bipartisanship, though.
There aren’t many other ways that Trump might try to soften the political language or come off as republican, according to Panagopoulos, according to the Washington Examiner.
In order to achieve this, Trump is still pressing Newsom and Bass to grant residence users access to their individual properties, and he is also still “committed to ensuring that these people get the money they need, ” Leavitt said.
Trump was “very inspired by the stress of the people it,” the press minister said, adding that he has been “absolutely committed” to making sure that the water is flowing in California to stop these fires and for people to gain access to their properties. The successes of this week so far demonstrate that this president will continue to put Americans first, and that is what I believe this president will do. ”
Although the meetings were closed to the press, both governors previewed their sit-downs with Trump on social media, with Abbott, who attended the president ’s signing of the “No Men in Women’s Sports ” executive order in the East Room, taking reporter questions after.
“We, again, talked about what was maybe the most pivotal issue in his campaign, the one that Americans wanted to make sure he got elected on, and that it was securing the border, ” Abbott said.
Abbott added that Texas would soon add 20 miles of border wall, and that the state government already had 4,000 jail cells and two military installations, one in Eagle Pass and the other in Del Rio, to give to its federal counterpart. The governor will return to Washington, D. C. next week as he tries to get$ 11 billion back for preventing “unprecedented illegal crossings.” ”
Before his sit-down with Trump, becoming the first Democrat to do so at the White House, Newsom also had previous engagements, including meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
In Washington, D. C. Newsom wrote on social media that he will meet with President @realDonaldTrump and members of Congress today to discuss obtaining disaster aid for LA. We won’t stop working until the fires have impacted everyone who needs the resources to rebuild and recover. ”
After Trump stopped short of reitering his nickname for the California governor, “Newscum, ” after his January trip to the Golden State, the Newsom meeting was particularly notable.
Trump said this week from the Oval Office from behind the Resolute Desk,” I spoke with Gavin Newsom and he’s very happy,” adding,” I spoke with him. “ I almost called him by the other name, my little nickname for him, but I think they’re all happy. They have a lot of water in California. It’s a shame that we didn’t have it about two months ago. ”
At the conclusion of his first week as president, Trump put his political differences with Newsom to the side during his arduous journey through California to assess the damage the fires had caused in and around Los Angeles.
Trump had earlier made a Friday trip to North Carolina to tour areas of the state that had been affected by Hurricane Helene‘s flooding last fall. The president there announced that he is considering changing the voter identification law and water management regulations.
Trump addressed reporters in the Tar Heel State,” I want to see two things in Los Angeles: voter ID so that the people have a chance to vote, and I want to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout the state.”
Despite the governor’s assertive body language being captured, photos were taken of the men and they appeared to be deferential to one another at Los Angeles International Airport.

“Thank you for being here, ” Newsom told Trump in front of reporters. “It means a great deal to all of us, not just the folks in the Palisades, the folks in Altadena that were devastated. We’re going to need your support. We’re going to need your help. You remained close by during COVID. I don’t forget that. And I have every expectation that we will be able to work together to make a quick recovery. ”
Trump replied, “We’re looking to get something completed, and the way you get it completed is to work together as the governor of the state. ”
