DHAKA: The interim government chief Muhammad Yunus agreed to the proposal on Tuesday as the election commission (EC ) of Bangladesh announced that general elections were being prepared to take place by December. The EC made the comments a day after Yunus promised to hold elections in Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP ) by December.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah stated to reporters,” We are getting ready for the national elections in December ( this year ).”
He was speaking after a conference with officials from 17 western countries and other countries, along with EU ( EU) and UN staff present.
Alternatively of local government elections, as proposed by a government-appointed fee, federal election is the goal, Sanaullah, who was flanked by the ambassadors, said.
He claimed that although the main adviser had previously mentioned two deadlines,” we are, nevertheless, preparing for the first date.”
The UN expects the impending surveys to be the best in Bangladesh’s history, according to UN member Stefan Liller, who also spoke at the meeting.
He, nevertheless, declined to comment on issues of holding for votes, saying” that is not for me to post”.
Chief assistant Yunus assured Zia’s BNP on Monday that the party would hold primaries by December as soon as possible, citing the deteriorating law and order situation and the precarious financial circumstances as factors.
After a meeting with the general assistant late on Monday night, BNP director general Mirja Fakhrul Islam Alamgir informed us that the government is working to keep the vote by December.
Three days after the resignation of the then-primitive minister Sheikh Hasina‘s Awami League program, Yunus assumed control of Bangladesh’s interim authorities in a student revolt led by the anti-discrimination movement.
His council of advisers, properly the cabinet, which includes three student movement leaders, launched a reform campaign constituting some commissions to propose restructuring of the country’s operational systems and even Bangladesh’s unique 1972 constitution.
While the commission for the democratic reform proposed a number of changes to the contract, the government-instituted income submitted their reports.
The law reform committee recommended changing state rules, deleting” humanism” and “nationalism” and suggested, if needed, the contract should be scrapped entirely rather of modifications, which was done previously some days.
The anti-discrimination student movement that led the uprising earlier vowed to “bury” the 1972 constitution calling it a” Mujibist” charter, a reference to the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In light of the apparent mounting forces from the BNP and other big parties, Yunus previously predicted that the elections could be conducted with little reforms by December or with significant reforms by June 2026.
The students ‘ platform implied they were going to float a democratic party themselves, prompting BNP to demand early elections, and it also raised questions about the government’s support for independence in the primaries because the kids ‘ system implied that they were going to float a political group of their own to participate in the election.
According to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the state could not ignore the duties posed by current worldwide theft incidents because” we have seen that those incidents happened one after another in top of law enforcement and other federal agencies.”
After the meeting with Yunus at his official Jamuna residence, he said,” As a result of these incidents, the overall law and order situation deteriorated a lot.”
The incidents he mentioned started earlier this month when a mob, using what they called a “bulldozer procession,” demolished Mujib’s residence at 32 Dhanmondi on February 5 with little government interference.
After that, the mobs set on fire a nationwide mayhem setting that destroyed Hasina’s close relatives, party leaders, and government officials.
Most of Hasina’s party’s ministers and top police and administrative officials are currently in jail or hiding abroad, mainly on suspicion of brutally repressing the uprising by allegedly killing hundreds of people during the July-August uprising.
