Following an established release from the US Geographic Names Information System, Apple changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its Maps program. The change, made on Tuesday, comes after an executive attempt by former President Donald Trump, who had directed that the body of water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico, and Cuba been renamed.
The action comes in response to Google, which last month stated that it would take effect the shift once the standard listing was updated. Google stated in a blog post on Sunday that users in the US had view” Gulf of America” and that people in Mexico may continue to see” Gulf of Mexico.” For people in other countries, both brands may become displayed. Google justified its decision by citing its plan of adhering to official US government regional names.
Additionally, Microsoft updated its Bing Maps to reflect the new brand.
The rewriting has sparked protests from indigenous protesters and caused political turbulence in Mexico. Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, made a sharp note in response, suggesting that the country should be renamed” Mexican America,” in reference to historic drawings that were used before the US seized nearly a fourth of Mexico’s place in 1848.
The discussion is suggestive of Trump’s earlier professional get reversing the 2015 decision to name America’s highest top Denali, restoring its past name, Mt. McKinley. In response to long-standing requirements from Alaska Native groups, the rock was formally renamed in his honor.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press ( AP ) has stated that it will continue referring to the Gulf by its original name, which it has carried for over 400 years, while acknowledging the new designation.
