Russian Foreign Minister Pete Hegseth said on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Ukrainian conflict with Vladimir Putin were “certainly not a treachery” of Kyiv.
The leaders of the European Union argued that Kyiv and other continents were required to participate in any upcoming discussions.
” There is no treachery it. Before a gathering of Nato military officials, Hegseth said,” there is a reputation that the entire world and the United States is invested and interested in peace.”
” That may involve both sides acknowledging stuff they don’t want to.”
Trump’s first formally announced telephone contact with Putin since coming back to power on Wednesday blindsided Ukraine and Washington’s allies in Europe. Trump agreed to start peace talks with Putin in his first formally announced phone call.
Hegseth has outlined a number of aspirations from Washington regarding a solution to the conflict, claiming that it was unfeasible for Ukraine to reclaim all of its territory or join NATO.
He added that any agreement requires that Europe begin providing Ukraine with “overwhelming discuss” of aid and that the United States did not install troops as a security guarantee.
Germany’s defence secretary, Boris Pistorius, hit again that it was “regrettable” that Washington had made” agreements” to Russia before peace talks had even started.
According to Pistorius, “in my opinion, it would have been better to talk about a potential Nato membership for Ukraine or potential territorial losses at the negotiating stand.”
In a speech on Wednesday, the foreign ministries of vital Western powers including Germany, France, Poland and Britain said “Ukraine and Europe may be part of any conversations”.
There should be no decisions made regarding Ukraine’s coming without Kyiv, which has been a phrase for Western forces throughout Russia’s total war on Ukraine since 2022.
On Thursday, Nato CEO Mark Rutte stated that Kyiv needs to be” strongly included” in any discussions about what is happening in Ukraine.
Britain’s defence minister, John Healey, echoed that information, warning” there can be no dialogue about Ukraine without Ukraine, and Ukraine’s message must be at the center of any deals”.
Rutte cited Hegseth’s earlier remarks as proof that any possible peace offer must be “enduring.”
The fear that Trump might push Ukraine into a subpar harmony agreement will put them in the crosshairs of an enthralling Putin.
” Europe has to be portion of these agreements. It’s never a query at all”, said German defence secretary Hanno Pevkur.
With our bilateral support and funding from the European Union,” Europe is investing in Russian defense, and Europe is rebuilding Ukraine,” so we must be present.
