During a battle conversation at a London, Ontario, authorities dinner, Doug Ford apparently joked about bringing back the death penalty, according to CBC News.
Ford made the comment at the London Police Service’s dinner on January 29 while discussing violence and house invasions, according to a statement from The Toronto Star. In a recording obtained by the newspaper, Ford was heard saying,” I don’t even go 25 years. I send them to Sparky right away, and we’ll get everything we can get from it.” In 1976, Canada abolished the death penalty.
The remark was met with” limited clapping and visible moans” from the crowd, The Star reported.
Following the reaction, a spokeswoman for the PC Party issued a statement clarifying Ford’s place.
According to spokeswoman Grace Lee,” The leading made a poor-taste joke out of anger for the many persons affected by violent offenders out on our roads because of the federal government’s broken loan program and soft-on-crime guidelines.”
The prime minister does not support the death penalty, but quite believes that more must be done to place violent and repeat offenders where they belong.
Ford has repeatedly urged Ottawa to strengthen the Criminal Code’s tightening of the loan procedure, arguing that the current method allows unsafe offenders to be on the streets.
In the Ontario election campaign, Ford’s comment immediately became a climax. Ontario Liberal head Bonnie Crombie condemned the responses, calling them “beyond disturbing”.
” We’re halfway through this self-serving vote, and instead of talking about health care, Doug Ford is pushing for the death penalty. Only like Trump. When suddenly, he’s showing us who he really is”, Crombie posted on social media.
The outcry comes as Ford’s PCs continue to hold onto a clear lead in the poll competition. The PCs have 45.5 % of votes, according to a recent Nanos survey conducted by CTV News, followed by the Liberals at 29.5 %, the NDP at 16.9 %, and the Green Party at 6.5 %.
