At her confirmation hearing on Thursday, she told lawmakers that if she were confirmed, the U.S. Department of Education may be smaller.
She argued that more regional power, rather than officials in Washington, would benefit students and teachers. She also said she would abide by President Donald Trump’s recommendations to improve the organization’s efficiency, such as moving the Office for Civil Rights to the Justice Department and supporting disabled people to the Department of Health and Human Services.
She stopped short of saying she had shut the office over, things Trump’s called for, arguing that takes an act of Congress.
” I may work with Congress to reposition the office to helping teachers, no controlling them”, McMahon said, adding, “defunding is not the objective around”, Reuters reported.
McMahon is expected to by confirmed by the GOP-controlled U. S. Senate in a party-line ballot later this month.
During Trump’s second name, McMahon led the Small Business Administration. The former-World Wrestling Entertainment’s CEO played a major role in Trump’s re-election battle and served as president of the America First Action political action committee.
” McMahon even said her interests as education secretary would be to expand school choice and skills-based understanding, offer local schools and parents more decision-making energy, and to protect individuals from discrimination and harassment”, K-12 Dive reported.
She also stated that she would look into the long list of antisemitic complaints made against universities and pledged to empower presidents to help protect students from aggressive school protests.
