DOJ fires 20 immigration judges: Reports

The firings, which included five associate chief immigration judges who haven’t yet been sworn in, and two others that were fired earlier this year, were reported to the union leader to the Associated Press. In addition, according to Polititico, the 13 new magistrates were expected to take the oath of office for the entire December group in light of the long-running immigration cases.

The Congressional Research Service estimates that there are more than 3.5 million cases in the delay.

The DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review, which oversees a total of 700 magistrates and handles immigration court proceedings, is responsible for all immigration courts. President Donald Trump removed several EOIR authorities on his first time in office, including former standing producer Mary Cheng and former captain immigration judge Sheila McNulty. After that, Trump appointed Sirce Owen, who was formerly an appealing immigration prosecutor, as acting director of the sub-agency.

The DOJ firings were all deemed politically motivated by the Biden management, according to one of the magistrates fired on Friday.

Trump has pledged to significantly reduce the size of the federal government by cutting unnecessary saving.
