Irony: She after compared Israel to Nazi Germany
The Nobel Peace Prize winner, who last year compared Israel to Nazi Germany because of the “genocide” of the Palestinians, worries that fact-seeking journalists are being “hinged” by social media platforms.
Spanish journalist Maria Ressa, a “professor of professional training” at Columbia University, last year told an Indiana University audience that social media users who “don’t like to inspire fear, anger and hate” are “handcuffed as well”, the Indiana Daily Student reports.
Ressa ( pictured ) claimed “false information” is disseminated six times faster than actual facts on social media platforms, and is read by more people.
In contrast, mis/disinformation” coupled with hate and anger” can result in harsh works, Ressa said, and the “goal” of propaganda is” to more marginalize areas such as women, racial minorities and the LGBTQ+ people”.
Ressa, the creator of the news website Rappler ( which claims to “fight for facts” ), argued that social media companies should be held accountable for misinformation posted on their platforms in the same way a homeowner would for removing snow from the sidewalk, which causes someone to slip and fall.
Companies are now protected from such duty by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Ressa even promoted the use of truth checking via “media companies” and the social media companies themselves.
But earlier this year, Meta ended its platforms ‘ fact-checking because the system made” too many mistakes”, “frustrat]ed ] users”, and” too often]got ] in the way of the free expression”. Additionally, one of the country’s oldest advertising agencies asserted that the Holocaust was caused by free speech in Nazi Germany over the weekend.
Who performs the truth checking in this situation? Who does fact-check Ressa’s promises that Israel is intentionally killing journalists and that it is committing murder?
Ressa won her Nobel in 2021 for her “efforts to secure freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and sustained peace,” according to her Columbia university website.
She previously taught at Princeton and is author of” How to Stand Up to a Dictator” which details how governments'” creep towards authoritarianism ]… ] has been aided and abetted by the social media companies”.
