Mayor of New York City Eric Adams filed a complaint against the Trump administration to demand reimbursement for providing temporary housing to illegitimate immigrants.  ,
” The$ 80 million was approved, paid for, and then rescinded, all while our city spent more than$ 7 billion of our own funds over the last three years”, Adams said in a statement. Without a doubt, our immigration system is dysfunctional, but managing an international humanitarian issue shouldn’t disproportionately fall on one area only.

The Shelter and Services Program, which is run by FEMA and is designed to assist local institutions that are flooded by illegal refugees, was administered to New York City under the Biden administration.

However, the new leadership criticized the financing as unlawful when Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency found out about it earlier this month.  ,
FEMA, according to Elon Musk, “violated the law” because it reimbursed millions of dollars to New York City for its actions in response to Trump’s administrative order, which forbids the distribution of public advantages to people who live in the country illegally.
New York City officials assert that the funding is still lawful because it was originally approved by Congress while under the Biden administration.
The Trump presidency “violates governmental regulations and terms of the Shelter and Service Program give terms, as well as abusing the federal government’s authority and responsibility to employ congressionally-approved and supported plans,” according to New York City’s lawsuit.” The administration rescinded over$ 80 million in FEMA refunds out of a city bank account… without notice or managerial process of any kind.
Over 231, 000 unlawful immigrants and asylum seekers have been legally required to provide temporary housing to the Big Apple in accordance with New York City’s right-to-shelter laws over the past few years.  ,
In response to a complaint filed by poor people who were sleeping on the streets and who were chronically drinking, the law was passed in 1981.  ,
Adams has frequently argued that” the right to shelter rules never was intended to address a humanitarian issue of housing people across the globe,” as he has recently stated in an interview with Dr. Phil.
” No one thought that was going to suggest 225, 000 refugees and asylum seeking”, he continued. ” This lawsuit was passed years back when a group of men who were poor did not possess shelter, and it was passed and put in place in a way that is distinct from what we are experiencing right now with the refugees and asylum applicants.”
In 2023, the Adams management challenged the legislation, citing the severe financial strains the flood of asylum seekers who had taken advantage of the city’s right to sanctuary had caused. A lawsuit deal reached in March 2024 scaled back some right-to-shelter rules.
Adams ‘ most recent attempt to recover significant financial losses, which he claims the city made by allowing illegal immigrants, comes as he struggles to keep his political career in a shambles.
New York Democrats earlier this month accused the president of quid pro quo with the Trump administration, stoking the heat that caused governor. Kathy Hochul (D-NY ) to consider removing him from office, a move she decided against on Thursday.
Adams cooperated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to search for illegal residents of the city who had committed crimes, leading to the claims against him. Because the president’s actions occurred shortly after the Department of Justice  stopped a problem case against the president, critics claim that he had been largely bribed by the Trump presidency to do so.

The DOJ’s , memo stated that it was attempting to halt the case because it thought Adams had been politically manipulated by the preceding justice department because of his opposition to the Biden administration’s comfortable immigration laws.
In the memo, acting DOJ Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove wrote,” We are mainly concerned about the impact of the trial on Mayor Adams ‘ ability to support important continued national efforts to protect the American citizens from the disastrous consequences of unlawful mass movement and resettlement.”
