A knife attack in Mulhouse, northeast France, on Saturday resulted in one citizen’s death and serious injury to two police officers, in what President Emmanuel Macron described as an” Islamist terror act”. Three additional soldiers suffered minor wounds.
The 37-year-old believe, on a despair protection blacklist, was arrested after the event. The suspect attacked municipal police officers while yelling” Allahu Akbar,” according to France’s national anti-terror prosecutors ( PNAT ). The Arabic word, which is frequently used as an expression of faith, was confirmed by witnesses.
A 69-year-old Portuguese regional intervened and was mortally wounded. One officer was injured in the ribcage, while another was in the cerebral artery.
The attack took place during a presentation supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo in a busy neighborhood of Mulhouse, a town of 110, 000 people. Safety measures were rapidly implemented, and military units were deployed to the field.
The suspect, apparently born in Algeria, was under administrative control and home incarceration with an eviction order from France, according to union resources.
Macron pointed out that there was” no doubt” the incident was a “terrorist act”, specifically” an Islamist terrorist act” and reiterated France’s commitment to combating terrorism.
An investigation into death and attempted murder “in relationship with a criminal business” is being conducted, according to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who was present at the field.
Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz expressed surprise, saying,” Horror has seized our area”. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou condemned the invasion, saying,” Fanaticism has struck again, and we are in mourning”.
