Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, recently revealed an anecdote from his high school years that showed how he once struggled with dating and received homecoming rejection. The businessman reflected on inviting one of the most well-known women in his top class, Vicki Weeks, to the dance in his new memoir,” Source Code,” which was released earlier this month, only to be turned down.
Gates acknowledged in an interview with People that he was “very inexperienced” about asking people out and that he knew it was a “long chance.” When he frequently attempted to call Weeks but kept getting a busy signal, the situation changed in an unexpected way.
In his autobiography, Gates wrote,” I dialed over and over, and at one stage added the issue of dialing the phone with my foot.”
When he eventually reached her, he let his senses get in the way. He recalled that he told her I had been trying her all day but couldn’t get through and had even dialed with my fingers, which was perhaps not the best way to make the case for myself as a beautiful day.
Weeks finally declined, asking for an invitation from someone else, which she afterwards accepted. Gates, however, continued to attend homecoming with a different classmate, whom he described as a “very awesome junior.”
Gates doesn’t harbor any regrets. She” couldn’t have been kind,” he said,” but she made it clear that she saw me as a friend.”
In a conversation with People, he explained his justification for including the toe-dialing information, saying,” I hesitated, and finally I tried to use a little bit of humor.”
The two ultimately became friends after his graduation attempt fell apart. Gates even noted that Weeks frequently joked about rejecting him after becoming one of the most successful traders in the world. For decades to come, Poor Vicki may get dealt a bad time with that, he said.
