When the atmosphere, which is between 10 and 50 km above Earth’s surface, experiences a sharp increase in temperatures of up to 50 degrees within 48 hours, a phenomenon known as sudden stratospheric heat ( SSW), a polar vortex collapse occurs.
This sudden warming causes the arctic vortex’s balance to be compromised, weakening its structure, and allowing snowy Arctic air to travel southward. In consequence, regions that usually experience mild winters can experience severe weather disruptions, heavy snowfall, and extreme cold.

According to AccuWeather’s Lead Meteorologist Paul Pastelok,” we are anticipating a movement of the antarctic swirl on the antarctic vortex on the continent of Europe and eastern Canada.”
When the polar vortex is damaged, whether it is stretched, displaced, or cut, it is, but not always, affect this arctic jet stream,” he continued.
The timing is unknown for North America, but it might alter for soon March through early April, he said.
The future soaring occurrence appears to be more powerful than it did in the past, which could lead to a drop in the intensity of the jet stream. In some cases, there might be significant rain in some areas as a result of arctic air masses moving towards southwestern regions of North America or Eurasia.
