After the former US president claimed his presidency was “reclaiming” the Panama Canal, Panama President José Raul Mulino launched a withering attack on Donald Trump, accusing him of “lying again.”
After Trump boasted about a deal whereby a US-led consortium led by BlackRock Inc. had a controlling interest in a Chinese-operated interface company in Panama, Mulino’s vehement reply came out. Trump has long advocated for the US to regain control of the canal, arguing that Panama does have done it in 1999.
In the name of Panama and all Panamanians, Mulino declared on X, refuting any suggestion that the US had put any pressure on the package.
The government of Panama is still awaiting approval for the$ 23 billion price. Trump insists that the US was “overcharged” for using the river despite Panama’s claim that China never had any control over its functions.
