Canada is set to get a new prime minister as the ruling Liberal Party selects a president to change Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January.
The success of the leadership culture is set to be decided on Sunday. They will take over as the government’s head of government and may soon face a general election, reports Reuters news agency.
Why is a new chief needed?
Unlike in countries like Britain and Australia, where perfect ministers can become quickly replaced by gathering lawmakers, Canada’s social system requires party leaders to be chosen through a particular leadership contest. Trudeau’s decision to step down immediately triggered the race, with the Liberal Party then tasked with picking a leader.
Who are the challengers?
Former Bank of Canada government Mark Carney is the clear frontrunner, with elections suggesting he holds a strong lead over former finance minister Chrystia Freeland. Freeland’s withdrawal last December contributed to the political upheaval that led to Trudeau’s return. Another candidate, former cabinet minister Karina Gould, is also in the competition but is considered a long picture.
How will the voting work?
The leadership challenge follows a ranked vote system, where authorized party members vote for their chosen candidates in order of preference. Canada is divided into 343 political divisions, each of which is allocated 100 points. These items are distributed disproportionately based on the number of vote each participant receives.
If no prospect secures more than 50 per cent of the full details in the first round, the candidate with the fewest points is eliminated. The vote for that prospect are next redistributed based on the second-choice tastes of their supporters. This procedure continues until one participant surpasses the 50 per cent level.
Who is vote?
Any American citizen or permanent resident who has registered as a Liberal Party member is eligible to vote. There is no cost to join the party. The Democrats have confirmed that around 400, 000 people signed up to take part in the management vote.
What happens future?
Canada’s second federal election is now scheduled for October 20 under the government’s fixed election laws. However, the new prime minister had call an early election at any time. Also, a no-confidence vote in Parliament is expected in late March. If opposition parties unite against the Democrats, the government may be forced into an earlier vote.
While the opposition Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, held a strong direct over the Democrats for much of the previous year, their benefits has narrowed since Trudeau’s resignation and current financial problems. The new prime minister will have little time to settle in before facing a critical political test.
