Gov. Cox and Free Speech

Despite stress and a reminder shot across the spear from the ACLU, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said on Friday that he would not reject Utah House Bill 77. The bill, which passed on Friday, restrictions public buildings and schools from displaying Pride colors. &nbsp,

Cox has an interesting history. On the one hand, he caught heat for using his preferred pronouns during a film target to the country’s youth, and he received some kudos from the Biden administration for his assistance in DEI issues in schools. On the other hand, he signed a bill providing for democratic carry into law and has taken up the fight to regain some of Utah’s open land from the federal government. Cox may be a combined case, but officials are gonna politick. &nbsp,

KUTV reported that on Friday,” some hundred” activists showed up at the state senate equipped with a super-sized Pride flag and the appropriate slogans. They opposed the act and wanted a filibuster out of Cox. The bill passed the senate, and Cox passed on the filibuster. One prototype remarked,” I am a transgender woman. I think being apparent is very important”. &nbsp,

The Utah branch of the American Civil Liberties Union dashed off a letter to Cox warning him that the act threatened free conversation for everyone. But Cox made an intriguing study. He asked the Pride followers if they would like to see MAGA colors hanging in schools. &nbsp,

Why, no, they do not. They were very emphatic about that.

I have come down on the opposite side of Cox on a few things, but these, I think he may consider search and partner. &nbsp,

I know you are far ahead of me here. For free conversation to be complimentary, a MAGA symbol may stand beside every Pride flag in every class in the country. But you also know that that is not how completely talk plays in the liberal mind. &nbsp,

For those of you who have never wandered the rooms of the Left, the logic is that for too long, liberals, white people, immediately people, whoever, have had free speech. The idea is that generally, they have had too much complimentary speech. In order to achieve equity, liberal speech had not only store but change another speech, particularly since the other varieties are hate speech by default because of their sources and very existence. Thus, free speech is statement that the most vociferous of the unhappy people has approved, which means it is not completely at all. &nbsp,

Again in my business time, a young lady, a co-worker, walked into the office one day. She was going to school at evening and said she had to make sure that her latest task was up to snuff because of her pleasure. She did not say that word with any feeling of irony or sarcasm. She actually believed it, and the pained, dejected look on her face said it all. &nbsp,

I wanted to say to her,” Kid, you live in a truck, work in a square farm, and barely apparent minimum income before taxes. Who told you that you were affluent”? I know who told her, and so do you: the teacher from whom she hoped to make a good quality and other instructors, as well. And in her head, she actually was wealthy. The program had broken her, and she didn’t even know it.

Recently, I saw a blog on X from one accusing the Trump administration of trying to shut down the Department of Education to ensure that students may be ignorant and therefore be readily dominated. But students can barely read, write, add, subtract, multiply, or divide now. They certainly can’t wrestle with the questions of free speech or debate the pros and cons of one philosophy versus another. &nbsp,

But, as the above story shows, they can tell you all about privilege or, on occasion, their pronouns. The goals of the people who demand Pride flags in classrooms but would throw up at the sight of a MAGA flag and those who will howl to save the money movers at the DOE are the same. They don’t want critical thinking. They want compliance. As usual, the opponents of tyranny are thinly veiled tyrants.

For the record, I would not want a Pride flag in my child’s classroom. I would also not want a MAGA flag there, either. I wouldn’t want them indoctrinated in either direction. I would want them to be able to reason, debate, and think for themselves. Honest brokers would not have a problem with that.
