ATHENS: Senior conservative senator Constantine Tassoulas was sworn in as Greece’s fresh leader Thursday, as the state grapples with lingering public anger over a dangerous road hazard two years ago.
The 65-year-old attorney and former political speaker may serve a five-year phrase in a mostly ceremonial role. He succeeds Katerina Sakellaropoulou, a retired senior determine and the first woman to hold the company.
A brave conservative, Tassoulas ‘ election marks a departure from the custom of seeking cross-party compromise for the president.
The center-right state is also dealing with the fallout from a 2023 road motion that killed 57 persons, which sparked cuts and large protests over a perceived lack of political responsibilities.
At Thursday’s service, national troops in draped clothes, red cap, and blowing shirts slow-marched past a makeshift memorial outside congress. The gift, adorned with lights and plants, featured the titles of the victims scrawled in red ink.
After his vote next month, Tassoulas pledged to encourage national unity.
” Greece may further enhance its global standing while even striving for development and faith within”, he said. ” I believe these objectives are frequently shared”.
Despite maintaining a lead in view surveys, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has seen his approval ratings fall in recent months. He is preparing a Cabinet reshuffle in an effort to reestablish public confidence, as polls indicate his state is losing aid to border far-right events.
A little left-wing group, Course for Freedom, boycotted Thursday’s swearing-in service in opposition of the president’s handling of the road disaster.
