Two Chinese visitors were detained for two weeks in China after taking “inappropriate” pictures at the Great Wall of China. The incident involved a person exposing his thighs while a person took photos of him, according to Chinese press reports on Thursday. After their confinement, the two were deported back to Japan.
The Japanese Embassy in China confirmed on Friday that the two persons were detained by local government on January 3. ” They were released and returned to Japan during January”, the ambassador said in a statement. But, it declined to provide further information, including whether the people may face travel restrictions, charges, or other legal effects.
Security guards at the UNESCO-listed page detained the travellers on the spot, and they were held for around two days before being sent back. Exposing one’s lower figure in a public location is illegal in China. The tourists afterwards told the Chinese ambassador that they had acted as a game.
The tragedy has sparked outrage in China, where traditional hostilities with Japan remain solid. On Weibo, a Taiwanese social media platform, a tweet transferring to” Chinese man and woman detained for indecent behavior at the Great Wall” was viewed over 60 million instances by Friday morning, according to AFP. Some top-liked feedback condemned the visitors, with some using angry language toward Chinese people.
Chinese professional Chen Yitian, who has over 7 million followers on social media, criticised the travellers, calling their behavior” shameful” and insulting to “my Great Wall”, reported The Japan Times.
