Special: Due to their alleged refusal to stop racial choices in PhD programming, the Department of Education has launched investigations into 45 colleges, including some of the world’s most renowned institutions.
Federal education authorities believe that teaming with” The PhD Project,” an organization that provides graduate students with networking opportunities and understanding into obtaining a Ph. but restricts registration based on race.
The Department is attempting to reposition civil rights police to make sure all kids are protected from unlawful discrimination. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon stated in a speech that the company has already begun Title VI studies into establishments where common racist abuse has been reported and Title IX investigations into those alleged to continue to allow gender discrimination.
She continued,” Today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure institutions are no discriminating against their students based on racial and racial preconceptions.” Individuals must be evaluated on merit and fulfillment, not on the basis of their skin color. We won’t back down from our determination.
The Washington Examiner has contacted the 45 institutions for feedback on the investigations, as detailed below.
Six additional institutions are accused of providing race-based scholarships, and one reportedly runs a program that treats students differently based on race.
In light of new path from the Trump administration, colleges and state offices across the country have taken steps to reduce diversity, equity, and inclusion plans. Following work at the state amount to outlaw DEI practices, the University of Iowa canceled its association with The PhD Project next month.
Before launching the investigations, the Education Department took some actions over the course of the last few months. The department issued a Dear Colleague letter to the schools on February 14 to urge them to stop using” stereotypes” and racial preferences in any educational programs.
On March 1, it followed up with the release of a frequently asked questions report with more details. According to the Education Department, the institutions in issue continue to discriminate against students based on race and violate civil rights laws.
The news comes just one moment after McMahon issued a warning to 60 colleges and universities to “do better” to prevent hatred on campus, warning that there will be repercussions if they do not protect Jewish individuals.

In the Feb. 14″ Dear Colleague,” Craig Trainor, associate director for civil rights, wrote,” Discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national nature is illegal and socially reprehensible.” Consequently, I write to clarify and confirm the equality rights of universities and other organizations that the United States Department of Education grants funding.
The Department of Education distributes billions of dollars in offers and other financing annually, so schools will take the threat of withdraw money significantly.
In 2020, the DEI action exploded across the federal scene, including at universities nationwide. However, conservatives claimed that it constituted unlawful prejudice, and President Donald Trump has cut back on DEI since taking office on January 20.
In a movement that has “every component of academia,” including enrollment, financial support, hiring, and education, Trainor wrote that white and Asian students in particular have faced discrimination on the basis of race, yet when they come from low-income people.
Many American schools and universities even encourage segregation by race at graduation ceremonies and in dormitories and other facilities, he wrote in a shameful echo of a darker period in this country’s history.
Democrats relying on Trump’s errors to fuel their revival.
In the 2023 Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard case, the Supreme Court upheld race-based admissions. On Inauguration Day, Trump signed an executive order aimed at destroying all DEI initiatives within the federal government.
The Education Department’s investigations come as the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government include the hiring of over 1,300 employees this week.
Of the 4, 133 employees in the Education Department that Trump inherited, 259 accepted the “fork in the road” resignations, 313 accepted payment of$ 25, 000 in separation payments, 63 probationary employees were fired last month, and another 1, 315 will be fired.
