The defence ministry has been asked by Canada’s information secretary Mark Carney to review a deal to purchase US-made F-35 fighter jets signed by the preceding Justin Trudeau management and assess whether it is the “best expense” for Canada.
According to government spokesman Laurent de Casanove,” Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked the defense ministry to decide whether the F-35 contract is the best investment for Canada, as it stands,” according to a statement released by the ministry.
The speech made it clear that the F-35 deal with the has not been terminated.
The agreement has not been canceled, but given the changing circumstances, we must complete our homework and make certain that Canadians and Canadian armed forces ‘ interests are protected by the agreement in its current form, it said.
The Trudeau administration signed a contract with US defense company Lockheed Martin to purchase 88 F-35s for CAD 19 billion ( USD 13 billion ) in January 2023.
Ottawa has now paid for a second delivery of 16 F-35s, which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2014.
Two days after Portugal said it was re-examining a potential purchase of the F-35 fighters in response to rising global outcry over the price war US President Donald Trump has launched and his steadsteady support for the Mediterranean empire, Carney made the move, one of his first formal acts since taking office on Friday.
Trump rattled America’s northern neighbor by imposing 25 % tariffs on all American goods before agreeing to suspend taxes on American imports covered by a North American business agreement.
The Democrat leader has also irritated Canadians by constantly suggesting that their nation would become the “51st US state.”
