In light of growing tensions with the US, Canada has signed a$ 6.5 billion deal to acquire Australia’s cutting-edge Jindalee Over-the-Horizon Radar ( JORN ) technology, protecting its Arctic surveillance capabilities.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the order during a visit to Nunavut, saying,” Now, I’m announcing that our state will be working with our long-standing defence and security spouse Australia to establish a new, long-range, over-the-horizon military sensor system.” It will make it easier for Canada to detect and respond to sea and air dangers over our Arctic both more quickly and farther away.
The agreement comes as Canada is under US pressure to raise defense saving. The new program will be in line with NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which keeps track of potential hazards to the globe. Donald Trump’s recent White House visit and his repeated threats to conquer Canada and Greenland have raised safety issues.
JORN, regarded as the most cutting-edge radar system of its kind, provides wide-area security up to 3, 000 kilometers away. JORN uses high-frequency signs that jump off the atmosphere to identify targets beyond the sky, in contrast to regular transponders that rely on line of sight.
Despite discussions for months about selling JORN to the US, confusion arose as a result of the” Expand inspection” led by Elon Musk, which examined Pentagon spending.
An American official told ABC that” the Canadians were usually going to follow the US buy and turbulence off that, but conditions changed and items moved quickly.”
The deal was welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who praised Canada as a “very important one” in terms of diversifying our business connections. In addition, defense secretary Richard Marles cited the potential for it to be” the biggest defence industry trade that Australia has ever been a part of.”
According to ABC, the UK has also expressed an interest in purchasing JORN technologies but has not yet approved a order.
