A major homeland security official claims that the United States is working with Canada and Mexico on “unprecedented” cooperation as President Donald Trump threatens tariffs to stifle the flow of morphine into the nation.

In a Wednesday meeting with the Washington Examiner, Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks praised the president’s decision to send thousands of troops south of the border. He claimed that an early agreement in Trump’s second term was the result of action, in addition to commitments from Canada to increase its border enforcement.

” We’ve seen extraordinary assistance and cooperation from both Mexico and Canada,” Banks said in a Zoom meeting from the Border Patrol’s Washington office.

Mexico took equivalent actions in 2021 as illegal border crossings reached record highs, but the Trump White House has defended the actions as evidence that its price risks have been successful. Canada made the announcement in February that it would create a” combined hit power” to stop illegal activity along the northern border.

Trump named Mexico, China, and Canada as the three nations responsible for the U.S. fentanyl outbreaks, which annually kills tens of thousands of Americans. Trump threatened to impose double-digit levies on each country until the” issue is alleviated.”

More than 10,000 Latino National Guard personnel have been dispatched to the United States ‘ Mexican border, according to Banks, along with more Mexican law enforcement from Mexico. We are collaborating closely with them. We are conducting “mirrored activities,” in which cases we are conducting similar patrols on both sides of the border.

According to banks, Mexico was motivated by its own self-interest, as cartel import prelude ingredients from China and then export the finished product to smuggle across the border.

They want the fentanyl to halt, according to my discussions with the Mexican government. They want to quit using opioids. And they want to end the shooting spree in the north, according to Banks. We are working together to prevent that for both nations ‘ safety and security. And we’ll continue to work with us and engage with us for national security as long as Mexico is ready to do so.

Initial delays to the tariffs were caused by the U.S., but it later levied a 25 % tax on Canada and Mexico in early March. &nbsp,

If those nations demonstrate significant progress in halting the flow of fentanyl and precursor components to the United States by April, Trump has also suggested that he could drop the flat 25 % tariffs on Canada and Mexico, in addition to a 20 % tariff on all Chinese imports.

The Mexican government has also increased its efforts to stop the flow of weapon south from the United States, according to Sergio Aguirre, spokeswoman for the Mexican Embassy in the United States.

” This is not just about cooperating for the sake of teamwork,” he said. It’s about achieving practical, dependable outcomes. We’ve seen significant progress thanks to mutual operations and knowledge sharing, including significant lab dismantling, increased disturbance of criminal networks, and,” Aguirre wrote in an email on Wednesday. Mexico will continue to support the United States in every way to achieve tangible and long-term results in its role as a ruler and similar partner.

Since 1967, there haven’t been as many illegal immigrant detention at the southern boundary as there have been as a result of international cooperation.

Less than 8, 400 people came into the region through the Border Patrol, which is in charge of apprehending those who attempt to enter the state between land-based access points global in February. During the Biden administration, when almost 250, 000 unlawful immigrants were detained in December 2023, regular detention reached their highest point in history.
