The US is developing an innovative missile defense system called the” Golden Dome,” which uses space-based radars, weapon interceptors, and laser weapons to produce an unknown shield. This initiative was first proposed by former US President Ronald Reagan 40 years ago, but it has since been revived on the orders of US President Donald Trump.
The Golden Dome, which was inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, aims to shield the US as a whole from threats like intercontinental ballistic missiles ( ICBMs) and hypersonic weapons. However, obtaining access to a nation of this length presents big problems. Researchers are debating whether it will protect all US lands, including Hawaii, Alaska, and foreign military installations.
According to a statement from Fox News, Defense officials believe that the Golden Dome can be achieved thanks to current systems. Phil Jasper, the CEO of Raytheon, stressed the need for a layered defense program to thwart various hazards, including those posed by drones and hypersonic missiles. US missile defense systems, such as THAAD and Patriot, are already in use, but their scope of use is constrained.
A funding plan for the project will soon be presented by the department of defense ( DoD ) and the office of management and budget. According to Defense firms, some components of the system could be in use by 2026. Prior to expanding, the strategy might begin by protecting important cities like Washington, DC, and New York.
The biggest problem, according to Jonathan Moneymaker, CEO of BlueHalo, is not technology but organizational, as many agencies must collaborate. Executive John Clark of Lockheed Martin suggested that replacing outdated defense systems might briefly lessen defense eagerness in other areas.
Tracking contemporary missiles that do not pursue predetermined paths is a big challenge, making them harder to catch. L3Harris Technologies ‘ Edward Zoiss pointed out the necessity of space-based radar to successfully evade such threats.
The missile defense system protecting Washington, DC, and a brand-new Iron Dome-style method being developed in Guam may be included in the Golden Dome. US is likewise developing powerful microwaves to stop helicopter problems.
Trump’s request for a fiscal year 2026 budget request for funding for the Golden Dome is anticipated to be included in the budget demand, but full application may get years and require substantial funding. Steven Morani, the acting director of defense, acknowledged the difficulties looming, but said the state is collaborating with private sector partners to resolve them.
