The New York University site was compromised on Saturday, and its pages was replaced with allegedly updated SAT and ACT results and GPAs for the group of 2024 students broken down by race.
The hacker claimed that NYU had racial bias and unlawful enrollment techniques. Apparently, the alleged data posted on the stolen page revealed that Asian students had higher common ACT and SAT scores, while bright students had higher GPAs, compared to Spanish and dark applicants.
The page’s text read,” Cultural affirmative action in university admissions was ruled illegal on June 29, 2023,” was displayed on a dark background with green writing on it. According to computer N-gyro Exploitation ( CNE), NYU continued in any case.
The screen’s caption” TOP SECRET//NIGINT//NONORM” was also included.
The Washington Square News student newspaper reported that the page contained four visible CSV files that have uncovered NYU admissions information since at least 1989, including over 3 million admitted students ‘ programs, demographic information, city and zip code, and membership status.
” The data also display Common Application information, which includes information on financial aid, rejected applicants, how many individuals applied for Early Decision, and personal information about siblings and parents,” the authors write.
The hacker appears on X as” @bestn–gy” and goes by the name” @bestn–gy.”
According to a screenshot released by the New York Post,” There’s a lot more information from their statistics warehouse that could be analyzed more.” The bare minimum of what I posted was “redacted” to show they were breaking the law.
According to the alleged information,” bright students finished with higher GPAs, but Asian students performed much on ACT and SAT checks.”
John Beckman, a NYU spokesman, did not confirm the exploit, and neither did the Post or Washington Square News.
According to him,” The University reported the hack to law enforcement, is taking steps to ensure that the intruders are out of our systems, and is reviewing the University’s systems to improve its stability.”
This thief is also credited with earlier hacking the University of Minnesota site in 2023, which exposed 7 million social security numbers.
