We talk about being pro-life, and this seems like the right course of action, says a school priest.
The Franciscan University of Steubenville just constructed a new pregnancy residence close to campus to give students who are expecting mothers a secure, nurturing environment.
The Rev. S. B. C. blessed the postpartum home by giving it the name Guadalupe House. In February, the Catholic University’s Franciscan friar Jonathan St. Andre visited.
In a recent interview, St. Andre told The College Fix,” We started to realize that we had some individuals who, while they were below, were pregnant.” We talked about being pro-life, and this seems like the right thing to do, and we felt like we really needed to give them that help.
It embodies our school tenets of face, conversion, and community. These young people feel encountered, loved, and cared for in a secure, sacred place, according to St. Andre.
When asked what inspired the home’s brand, he responded,” I think it was one of the first names that came to mind because Our Lady of Guadalupe is showing with children.
She is” the life’s protector.” Although I did not know the name, when I heard it, it just seemed so appropriate, St. Andre said.
According to a news release, Heather and Doug Perry gave the house to the school. It served as the Ad Gentes Mission home where American preachers, including Franciscan students and alumni, was periodically reside due to it becoming a maternity home.
The structure consists of a two-story residence with three rooms. It has a living room, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining area, several store spaces, a fireplace, an department, and a back garden terrace.
The Guadalupe House has a personal coordinator named Viktoria McQueeney, a graduate student majoring in counseling at the college.
McQueeeney stated to The College Fix that her responsibilities include providing occupants with guidance and support during a recent visit of the home.
Although there are no currently-existence homestays, Franciscan wants to offer a place for expecting mothers while their studies are at the school, she said.
According to McQueeeney, the pregnancy property also helps to avoid liability issues because new mothers and newborns can no longer reside in the dormitories. She explained that this is done for security motives, and that it is necessary for both the mother and the baby.
According to a news release, “pregnant moms enrolled at Franciscan University… for up to two semesters at the recent on-campus housing rate” can rent the house. Additionally, mothers who stay there will also get “material help like diapers, baby clothing, and daycare furniture.”
Some claim that the pregnancy household encourages premarital sex, which is against the Catholic Church’s teachings, are wrong.
The temple and the school are obvious that the gift of gender is for marriage, according to St. Andre.
Yet, he told The Fix,” the temple is also equally evident that we have a phone to reach out to people on the profits.” And I want to be apparent when I say profitability; however, that doesn’t mean they’re less. This indicates that they are going through a period in their lives where they require more of the care of the Body of Christ.
