The US Africa Command ( Africom ) said on Saturday it conducted an airstrike in the Puntland region of Somalia, killing several members of the Islamic State ( IS ). The operation was carried out in cooperation with the Yemeni authorities and precise many ISIS-Somalia jobs.
The attack occurred south of Bosasso, a key port town in Puntland, a semi-autonomous area in northern Somalia. While the number of deaths was not specified, Africom said first assessments showed multiple IS workers were killed, and no residents were harmed.
This attack is part of a more substantial counter-terrorism activity in Somalia. Two days earlier, the US government had conducted a similar assault, and in February, Puntland officials reported US strikes had eliminated important IS images.
Although IS has a reputation in Somalia, it remains smaller than Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked violent group that controls large parts of the country. But, IS has been gaining control in Puntland, which has become a key foundation for its activities in the region.
