Tech giant Elon Musk has expressed hope for a zero-tariff commerce area between the United States and Europe, just nights after US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping fresh tariffs, including a 20 per cent tax on European Union goods.
Speaking via videoconference hosted by Italy’s far-right League group in Florence on Saturday, Musk said he hoped the two sides had shift” to a zero-tariff position, essentially creating a free-trade area”.
The Tesla chief even hoped for the two nations to “establish a very close relationship”, a remark that contrasted Trump’s earlier criticism of the EU, including his claim that the alliance was created to “screw” America. Musk more wished for more “freedom of people to move between Europe and North America”.
Musk even called for” no taxes at all either way”, between the US and Britain, during Trump’s first phrase, the New york Times reported.
His presence in Florence marked a culmination of his growing position with far-right elections across Europe. Only a moment earlier, Musk and Trump both showed support for European far-right find Marine Le Pen, who was convicted of larceny this week and barred from running for office.
This year, Musk showed support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany ( AfD ) party and spoke out about immigration in Italy, leading to a rebuke from the Italian president.
On Saturday, Musk shared the stage with League group leader Matteo Salvini, reminder of the problems of repression and large emigration. He also used the platform to promote his cost-cutting department of government performance, backing Trump’s attitude on Ukraine and criticising what he described as the EU’s costly requirements.
