The US Supreme Court on Monday upheld a lower court’s ruling that the Trump administration had used to obstruct the imprisonment of illegal Venezuelan refugees under a 1798 Alien Enemies Act.
Chief justice John Roberts and four additional liberal judges voted to override the district court’s temporary block in the 5-4 decision, while Trump’s three liberal justices and righteousness Amy Coney Barrett, who was appointed, disagreed.
Through a statement directed at the Tren de Aragua group, President Trump authorized arrests under the Alien Enemies Act. In reaction, the ACLU sued five Cuban nationals held in Texas, prompting city judge Boasberg to temporarily halt the deportations.
Amy Coney Barrett: who is she?
- Before joining the court system, Amy Coney Barrett taught rules at Notre Dame University for almost 20 years. She received her undergraduate degrees from Rhodes College and Notre Dame Law School afterward.
- The 48-year-old superme court judge previously served as an appellate court assess before being appointed by president Trump to the highest court in 2020.
- Barrett is one of the four ladies serving on the US Supreme Court as equate judges.
