Confederate General Robert E. Lee gave himself to Union Lt. Gen. U. S. Grant on this day, 1865, bringing a tremendous success for the United States.
Although Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and Grant‘s Army at Appomattox Court House were not the end of the Civil War because another Confederate troops had yet to surrender, it truly was a decisive victory for Grant and the Union and predicted the Confederacy’s final and inevitable defeat. Additionally, it was a success of the republicans over the rebels, of the freedom fighters over the whites. Abraham Lincoln and Grant had made it abundantly clear that they were in favor of ending slavery as Lee’s troops rioted, killing every black man they had, as well as enslaving, as they did.

Confederate soldiers were permitted to keep their saddles and side shoulders in accordance with the Appomattox terms, which stipulated that rebel troops who laid down their arms would hardly face federal prosecution if they were tried by the United States government. Sadly, while some of the Confederates did put the past behind them, some were never reconciled with the outcome of the war. The plan was to try to build friendly relations between the two soldiers.
