French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot praised direct talks between the US and Iran on Monday, but he insisted that Europe had been “vigilant” if its security problems were taken into account.
The first round of talks between Egyptian foreign ministers and US Middle East minister Steve Witkoff took place on Saturday in Muscat via Omani intervention. This was the highest-level Iran-US nuclear negotiations since a 2015 deal was broken.
They contended to go back to each other in seven weeks.
At a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Barrot stated,” We pretty much welcome this step, but we will be diligent with our British and German friends and associates to ensure that any conversations that may be conducted are consistent with our safety interests.”
Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday that discussions with the US scheduled for the following weekend would continue to be “indirect” and would concentrate solely on the lifting of sanctions and the nuclear issue.
