Last Friday, a gathering of about 40 University of Pennsylvania students and faculty members gathered to observe an “interfaith celebration” for the “martyrs” of Israel’s reported “genocide” of the Palestinians.
There has been “over fifty days of unfathomable murder in Gaza,” according to a blog on Up Against the Occupation’s Instagram page, for which” no words can describe the depth of ] the] continued heartbreak.
The event was organized by Penn Faculty, Staff &, GradWorkers for Justice in Palestine, Philly Socialists, and the Philly Palestine Coalition, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian, which notes that companies like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch support the situation in Gaza as a “genocide” and doesn’t explain any businesses that disagree.
The teams were informed by school officials that they had to relocate to a” satisfactory” location because they “did not have a ticket for the occasion area.”
Non-academic activities must be approved by Penn’s University Career at least two weeks in advance, according to school recommendations.
From the narrative:
Several moments of silence, songs, and speeches from organizers were included in the]Vigil ] programming. An administrator emphasized the right to grieve Palestinians who have been” silenced, brutalized, and disrespected” in one statement.
The organizer continued,” It is out ]sic ] right to make faith when a soul leaves this Earth.” To be laid in harmony and to have one’s brain treated as the heart departs is a mortal right.
They also criticized the” calling all around brave” as being “hat]red].
The administrator said,” I don’t have told you, you are brave for coming around to grieve.”
The Germantown Mennonite Church’s two ministers also elicited” cooperation” from the vigil’s administrators. The preachers described the coming” Holy Week” of the Church and what mourning means for “folks from the Christian history.”
One reverend remarked,” Our streets imbue God.” Every day the attack begins, they pray for the temples and the homes.
Another attendee at the vigil chanted,” We want to]…] respect the Arab victims who were murdered by the Zionist foe.”
On Instagram, vigil participants were instructed to” cover up with more than a face mask” ( to “protect the health and safety” of others ), “leave their Penn ID at home,” and” not engage” with Penn administrators and law enforcement.
