As part of a local tour to promote a two-state alternative to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, France’s foreign secretary Jean-Noel Barrot did meet officials in Baghdad on Wednesday.
Barrot, who will also travel to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, is on a tour to enable “prepare for the global event for the execution of the two-state answer” that Paris will co-organize in June with Riyadh, according to a statement from the French foreign government.
Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed France intended to grant a Palestinian state recognition, perhaps as early as June.
He claimed that he hoped it do” cause a number of other accolades,” including those of Israel.
Iraq has long recognized a Palestinian state, but it has never recognized Israel and does not have official ties with it.
The official recognition of a Palestinian state has been viewed as the final product of a harmony approach between Palestinians and Israel for years.
Before making his first journey to Iraq, Barrot may meet with the leaders of the northern intelligent Kurdistan region in Baghdad to meet with his rival Fuad Hussein and prime minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
France may have a chance to get ready for the second edition of the Baghdad Conference on Regional Stability, which Paris and Baghdad have been co-organizing since 2021.
Additionally, it aims to confirm” France’s commitment to maintaining regional stability and its role in the security of Iraq.”
Additionally, it may help” France to reiterate its commitment to continue the fight against” the Islamic State group, particularly “in a framework of change in neighboring Syria,” and to support Washington’s decision to reduce its troops ‘ presence there.
As part of the US-led global coalition to combat IS, which was defeated in Iraq in 2017, France has deployed soldiers there despite the existence of some of its ideology tissue.
Baghdad is now attempting to end the coalition’s objective and replace it with diplomatic defense alliances with coalition members, asserting that its own forces can take the lead in the battle against the weakening jihadists.
