Late on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump praised hopes for a” good deal” on trade with China, but his best officers provided few details on how Washington may de-escalate its devastating price war with Beijing. Trump responded to questions from reporters about whether his country would have a” fair deal” with China, adding that “everything is active” when asked if Washington was talking to Beijing. Trump argued that Beijing’s future depended on them, despite the fact that he claimed he and Chinese President Xi Jinping get along “very well” and hopes they can reach an agreement.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Trump administration would consider lowering import tariffs from 145 % to 65 %, pending discussions with Beijing, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
The status of the discussions is still ambiguous despite indications that Washington is pursuing a fair resolution. Trump responded,” Every day,” when asked if there was direct US trade contact with China.
China, however, made it clear on Thursday that it had not discussed trade with Washington. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, called reports of such information “false news” and said that China and the US have not discussed tariffs or reached an agreement. Trump, however, refuted Chinese assertions. Trump told reporters,” They had a meeting this morning,” but he would not specify who he was referring to. It’s irrelevant who” they” are. They had meetings this morning, and we’ve been meeting with China, but we may reveal it later.
He Yadong, a spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry, said on Thursday that the US should impose all “unilateral tariffs” on China “if it truly wanted” to solve the trade problem. He remarked,” The person who tied the bell must untie it.” He also urged the US to pay attention to the “rational voices” of the international community and domestic parties.
