Secretary of State Marco Rubio was instructed on Saturday to act immediately on the matter after calling for the United States ‘ military and commercial vessels to be granted free passage through the Panama and Suez Canals.
” British ships, both military and commercial, may be permitted to pass through the Panama and Suez Canals for complimentary”! Trump used his Truth Social software to write. He claimed that without US assistance, both strategic lakes do” not exist” and that he had instructed Rubio to “immediately take care of” the situation.
In recent months, Trump has argued in favor of more US power of the Panama Canal. His most recent remarks also shifted attention to the Suez Canal, a critical link between Asia and Europe that, prior to security concerns, had formerly accounted for about 10 % of global sea business.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels ‘ attacks on Red Sea transport roads have forced ships to divert their attention from the southern tip of Africa, causing significant disruptions and financial loss. Following the start of the Gaza combat, the insurgents began attacking ships and claiming to be Palestinians.
Egypt reported a$ 7 billion loss in revenue last year as a result of a 60 % decline in the Suez Canal. Under Trump’s management, US military attacks against Huthi positions have increased, causing almost daily assaults in the last month. Trump has pledged to keep conducting military exercises “until the Huthis are no longer a risk to shipping.”
