Elon Musk’s long-held vision of turning SpaceX’s launch site into an official city has taken a giant leap forward. In a historic vote, residents of Boca Chica Village, Texas, overwhelmingly chose to incorporate their community as a new municipality: Starbase.
By 7 p.m. on Saturday ( local time ), 173 of the 177 votes counted by Cameron County election officials had voted in favor of the creation of the new city. Since 2021, when Musk first proposed the brand” Starbase,” the area, which covers roughly 1.6 square miles, has been at the center of his interests.
” Starbase, Texas is now a genuine metropolis”! The richest man in the world and his jet company, SpaceX, celebrated a symbolic step with a petition posted online.
The vote effectively creates a local authorities for SpaceX’s South Texas foundation, which will have the power to oversee planning, taxes, and other provincial affairs.
While the majority of the 283 eligible voters are either Tesla workers or members, some residents have expressed their concerns. Critics claim that the business has altered the environment and remote character of the area. Even so, earlier election results, which reportedly included more than 200 votes, indicated a strong incorporation push.
Although Musk did not show up on the first voter list, Cameron County’s voter registration process was heavily impacted by his presence having final statewide in November.
Starbase’s formation may provide a precedent for tech-driven city planning, but it also raises questions about business influence on political life.
