MADRID: Spain’s authorities claimed on Sunday that it needed to “manage the causes” of the country’s global blackout on April 28 that even affected Portugal and some of west France.
Environmental minister Sara Aagesen reported to El Pais newspaper that” all assumptions” were being examined, including a potential attack. She claimed that the anomaly might have been caused by solar panels installed in south Spain that were unable to unbalance the network, as the system operator Red Electrica has previously suggested.
She said,” We are aware that those setups in the system have stopped functioning.” However, she added that “talking about solar panels ( as the cause ) might be hurried” and that pointing the finger at renewable energy sources was “irresponsible and simplistic.”
The outage halted all of Spain’s power supply, causing mobile phone and internet connections, paralyzing the rail system, and enticing hundreds of people in weights.
Experts have questioned whether the electricity grid’s needed balance between supply and demand had been disrupted, perhaps as a result of sudden fluctuations in wind or solar power.
Aagesen argued that Spain’s energy mix has been reliant on renewable energy for a long time and refuted the notion that” a significant amount of renewable power” jolted the network.
She noted that the program “had functioned pretty well” and that there had previously been earlier times with higher solar power generation and lower need.
In a geopolitically fragile world, “renewable power allows Spain to reach a great deal of power independence,” she said.
