80 years after WWII: Is the US turning its back on Europe?
US President Donald Trump ( File Photo AP ) is at left, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ( Legislative ).

The German Wehrmacht gave up on May 8, 1945. This marked the end of World War Two in Europe, which had begun on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland and Asia. It lasted for a few more weeks before Japan’s retreat. Adolf Hitler, the Nazistemperant, killed himself in the” Führer” Bunker in Berlin a few days earlier. Around 60 million people died worldwide, six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis, significant parts of Europe were destroyed, and millions of people were missing or displaced. This warfare had an even greater horror than any prior wars. A new, manic buy developed in Europe and beyond after the fall of National Socialist Germany in 1945, which lasted for about 40 times. The US, UK, and France collaborated with the Soviet Union to beat the Nazis during the War.

If the US improve its military presence in Europe?

However, tensions started to build up well before the war’s conclusion: The European powers supported politics and sought a complimentary ally with the defeated states, while the Soviet Union, on the other hand, put all the nations it occupied under the umbrella of a communist regime. What was afterward known as the Truman Doctrine was announced by US President Harry Truman in 1947. The US’s goal was to prevent the Soviet Union’s rise by supporting “free individuals who are resisting attempted enslavement by armed minority or by external pressures.” Europe was divided into an eastern half dominated by the Soviets and an eastern half dominated by the Americans.

One can rely on US safety.

Germany quickly seized control of this turmoil, passing a frontier through the middle of the nation and Berlin. It was the Cold War’s period. The two nuclear military alliances, which were led by the US and operated under Russian control, used common deterrence to prevent nuclear war from starting. Nonetheless, the world did so on many occasions. The Federal Republic of Germany was a member of NATO and was protected by the US in the western region of Germany ( the nation remained divise until 1990 ). This continued to be true even after the Soviet Union’s collapse, the close of the East-West conflict in 1989/90, and European unification. It appeared as though Russia and the rest of the continent would develop calmly and politically for a while. NATO membership included nations that were once a part of the Soviet Union.

    Trump alternates between the two.

The fantasy has been disintegrated, however, since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. One of the tenets of the past order, which prohibited national borders from being changed happily, was no longer in effect. Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has also questioned NATO’s safety measures. Trump once more said,” I won’t defend them” in March,” If they ( other NATO countries ) don’t pay. We are currently experiencing a historic revolution similar to the main political turning points of the 20th centuries, particularly those of 1945 and 1989/91, according to historian Norbert Frei from the University of Jena. According to his partner, Potsdam historian Manfred Görtemaker,” the atlantic order established after the Second World War, mainly by the US, has been disintegrating in front of our highly eyes,” according to Görtemaker.” The intercontinental order has deteriorated tremendously,” according to Görtemaker. Not the first US president to desire that Westerners spend more on their own defence, Donald Trump was not the first. Barack Obama once said in 2016:” Europe has sometimes been too comfortable in its defence. But Trump has taken things a lot further. He then essentially supports Russia in the Ukraine War. In the event of a peace deal, Ukraine would neither be able to reclaim all of its landmass or visit NATO. This is encouraging for Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia. Putin stated last year that the whole Euro-Atlantic security program is crumbling in front of our eyes.

Friedrich Merz wants “independence” from Washington.

Some Germans anticipate that the old intercontinental attempt will be reinstated following Trump. Is that believable? Norbert Frei is skeptical, saying,” As of right now, it’s difficult to say how much will be left over after the Trump presidency, and it’s even more difficult to say whether anything can be rebuilt after.” Germany has strongly rooted in Europe actually since Konrad Adenauer declared an absolute devotion to the West. Germany should now exert every effort to ensure that, if necessary, the European Union may survive physically, financially, and politically, even without the US. He declared right after the Bundestag elections that Europe has create its own security strategy that is unconstrained by America. Manfred Görtemaker warns against believing that the US is independent. Because it is the Americans who will continue to maintain nuclear deterrence, the Europeans may not be able to go their own method. Therefore, it makes sense to rekindle a close relationship between the US and Europe on the basis of a fresh pragmatism calculus.
