    Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old American, has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, making history as the first American to head the Roman Catholic Church. Chosen by 133 cardinals, Pope Leo takes charge of the 1.4 billion-strong global Catholic community after the death of Pope Francis. Here are ten key facts about the new pope.1. First American Pope in history Pope Leo XIV is the first person born in the United States to be elected as pope. His election marks a turning point for the Vatican, reflecting the global shift in Catholic demographics and influence.2. Born and raised in Chicago Robert Francis Prevost was born in 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. His early years were shaped by a strong Catholic upbringing in one of the most diverse cities in the U.S.

    3. At the age of 27, he was ordained a pastor in 1982. This set off a career within the Church that was devoted to both rural and intellectual work. 4. Prevost, a preacher and pope in Peru, spent almost 20 times there. He served as a tutor and parish priest before becoming a priest. Additionally, he obtained citizenship in Peru as a naturalized resident. 5. Leader of the Augustinian Order Formerly a Catholic theological order, he was the global brain of the Augustinians. He heavily traveled and established links across the globe while serving in this capacity. 6. Pope Leo XIV, an analyst in canon law, received a degree in the canon law from Rome’s Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. His job at the Vatican was influenced by his constitutional background. 7. Previously oversaw the appointment of international priests. He was in charge of the Vatican’s office, which was in charge of appointing and managing priests around the world. 8. Fluent in three language, he has developed a strong connection with Catholic areas around the world because he speaks fluently in English, Spanish, and Italian. 9. Trump-era plans criticised Despite Trump’s public acclaim, Pope Leo’s confirmed social media account previously shared messages deploring his immigration policies, including a 2024 share that condemned large deportations. 10. Respected for having a global perspective Having spent the majority of his life outside the United States, Pope Leo XIV is seen as a worldwide number within the Church. His international exposure makes it advantageous to guide a diverse and expanding Christian community.
