WFP warns of record hunger levels in west and central Africa

The UN World Food Programme sounded the alarm on Friday over the rising poverty in west and central Africa as supplies “record rates.” More than 36 million individuals are battling to satisfy their meals needs, according to a statement from the organization indicating that 52 million people may need to be able to do so in the short time between the summer harvests. In West and Central Africa, prolonged conflict, displacement, economic decline, and repeated extreme weather are causing millions of people to experience emergency levels of hunger, according to the report. The WFP had previously called it an “unprecedented crisis” at the end of March because of a 40 % drop in its funding for 2025. President Donald Trump’s decision to end aid programs under the US Agency for International Development ( USAID), along with cuts to aid spending by a number of Western nations, have worsened the situation.

The WFP stated at the end of April that it would need to reduce its workforce globally by 25 to 30 %. Without immediate cash, five million people could end up losing assistance altogether, according to the WFP. Thousands of lives are at risk, according to Margot van der Velden, the WFP’s local director for West and Central Africa. Without urgent money, WFP may be forced to reduce both the number of people who have been reached and the volume of food supplies distributed.
