How Trump’s trade war can wipe out toilet papers in US

How Trump's trade war can wipe out toilet papers in US

Suzano SA, Brazil’s leading tissue producer, has warned that US President Donald Trump’s new levies are preventing supplies of a crucial component used to make toilet paper. The Portuguese company reported that, compared to the same time last year, its imports of bleached wood fiber to the US dropped by 20 % in April. This kind of fiber is a crucial component of the toilet paper and other hygiene products sold in American homes. According to Suzano CEO Joo Alberto de Abreu, “we’ve had to move higher costs on to US buyers,” according to Bloomberg News. Brazil is currently subject to a 10 % tax on exports to the US, along with many other nations, excluding China. The circumstance brings back memories of the pandemic stress from 2020, when everything except toilet paper was washed up from shelves.

Manufacturers caution that a slight resurgence could result in another jump even though the products are still available for the time being. Warnings have also been raised by Polo Global Management. According to its chief economist, Trump’s wider price policies, particularly those aimed at Chinese goods, could lead to empty shelves, layoffs, and perhaps a recession by the summer of 2025. As Suzano adapts, the company cautions that pulp is important rather than just another organic material. American customers might experience the effects of increased business conflicts.
