According to the New York Post, House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green is pressing Tennessee officials to turn over unredacted videos and rumors about a 2022 visitors stop involving Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Under the Trump administration, Garcia was a Peruvian regional who was deported to El Salvador on foot in March. In response to rising concerns over the national management of Abrego Garcia’s situation, which has become a hot button in immigration and due process debates, Green’s request is made. Edited officers bodycam video, which Fox News cited, shows Abrego Garcia being pulled over by the Tennessee Highway Patrol while transporting eight different people in a vehicle.

A trooper’s alleged suggestion that Abrego Garcia was “hauling these folks for money” is heard, bringing up human trafficking concerns. But, the 29-year-old was given a citation for driving while having an expired certificate. According to a source quoted by Fox, deleted portions of the images showed troopers discussing whether to visit immigration authorities. Federal officials apparently did not arrive at the scene despite receiving a call. Brego Garcia informed police that he was taking development job to Temple Hills, Maryland. Later, it became apparent that Jose Ramon Hernandez-Reyes, the driver, had been convicted of migrant smuggling and had reportedly worked with Garcia several times to transport illegal immigrants. Hernandez-Reyes, who is already in federal prison, claimed to run a “taxi service” for smugglers and had often hired Abrego Garcia. The Trump presidency used the event to present Abrego Garcia as an MS-13 part despite no charges coming from the stop. However, his counsel, including Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, dispute any gang affiliation and point out that there are no fees or criminal records. According to Sandoval-Moshenberg,” There is no proof of a murder in this footage,” he was quoted as saying by CNN, claiming that Garcia’s imprisonment violated his right to due process. A US emigration judge had ordered Garcia not to be deported to El Salvador in 2019, citing group threats to his life. However, he was wrongfully kicked out of the CECOT megaprison in March. Since then, the Supreme Court has upheld a lower court’s gain order. Trump has still objected, citing alleged group connections, and has refused to bring him up. According to Green’s email, the FBI officials who declined to apprehend Garcia are also asked for their names, claiming that the event reflects “reckless, open-borders policies” under the Biden-Harris management.
