Two men were found guilty on Friday of cutting down one of the United Kingdom’s most memorable trees. Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were found guilty by a Newcastle Crown Court judge of felling the Sycamore Gap trees, which had stood second to Hadrian’s Wall in northeast England for around 200 years. Chief attorney Gale Gilchrist said the Sycamore Gap had been” an classic biological location” that had brought “immeasurable pleasure” to visitors and locals.

Do you think the sentence for vandalizing the Sycamore Gap trees should be serious?

In a statement after the verdict was delivered, Gilchrist said,” In merely under three days, Graham and Carruthers ended its historical reputation in a deliberate and senseless act of destruction. ” What was the judge told? The accused, who were once close companions, both claimed that they had had nothing to do with the event, while Graham accused Carruthers of felling the trees.

The jury deliberated for almost five hours before finding the pair innocent on two counts of unlawful destruction — one for the willow tree, and one for the Roman walls, which was damaged when the trees fell onto it. The courtroom was told how the two males— who showed no noticeable effect when the decisions were read out — used a saw to cut the trees down. They filmed the action on Graham’s mobile and shared the film, which was also played to the jury. ‘ Moronicmission’Prosecutor Richard Wright said the couple had driven to the blog near Hexham, in Northumberland state on the boundary with Scotland, on September 27, 2023, cutting down the common tree in” a matter of minutes” and returning to their home town of Carlisle after completing” their stupid mission. ” Wright even told the jury how the couple had exchanged voice and text messages the following day in which they “revelled” in watching the effect grow around the world. No cause for the murder another than” foolish vandalism” was provided. In his final remarks, attorney Wright suggested that the couple had cut the sycamore down” for a bit of a laugh,” but that they had failed to appreciate the popular outrage their actions may produce. ” They woke up the morning after and quickly realized — as the information media rolled on, as the indignation of the community became evident — it must have dawned on them that they don’t see anyone else smiling,” Wright said. ” Far from being the big men they thought they were, everyone else thought that they were rather pathetic,” the prosecutor added. Judge Christina Lambert ordered the pair held in custody until sentencing on July 15. She said they could face” a lengthy period in custody. ” The maximum sentence for criminal damage is 10 years in prison. Why was the tree so beloved? Generations of followers had prized the tree for its picturesque setting, planted symmetrically between two hills next to the wall built under Emperor Hadrian in 122 CE to protect the Roman Empire’s northern frontier. The tree, which was highly popular among photographers, hikers and locals, gained even more widespread fame after it was featured in the 1991 movie” Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner.
