Syria's president visits Bahrain, discusses regional affairs with king

Lebanon: Syria’s leader flew to Bahrain Saturday where he discussed reciprocal relationships and local politics with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on his latest trip abroad since taking office in January. Syria’s state media company, SANA, said President Ahmad al-Sharaa is heading a high-ranking committee to Bahrain, a gulf region that had relations with former President Bashar Assad until his removal from power in early December. Bahrain’s media company said the two officials discussed mutual relations and way of boosting them, as well as local politics and way of backing Syria’s security and stability. Al-Sharaa’s attend to Bahrain comes weeks before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the place for talks with officials of coast Arab countries.

Since taking company, al-Sharaa has visited Muslim and local places including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Turkiye. Earlier this year, he made his second trip to Europe where he met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris and announced that his country is having direct talks with Israel. After Assad’s drop, Syria and its neighborhood have been calling for the lifting of American restrictions that were imposed on Assad during the first month of the country’s fight that broke out in March 2011. The lifting of sanctions may open the way for oil-rich Muslim countries to take part in funding Syria’s rebuilding from the damage caused by the conflict that has killed almost half a million people. The United Nations in 2017 estimated that it would cost at least USD 250 billion to restore Syria. Some experts today say that amount could accomplish at least USD 400 billion. In April, Saudi Arabia and Qatar said they will give Syria’s outstanding bill to the World Bank, a move likely to make the global organization continue its support to the war-torn state. Since the fall of Assad, a close ally of Iran, Syria’s new leadership has been improving the country’s relations with Arab and western countries.
