Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, was released from custody Friday night following his arrest while protesting at a private Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility that is expected to play a key role in Trump’s plans for mass deportations.
Three people of the Democratic House were present at the demonstration, but they were not taken into custody. Baraka, 55, addressed followers outside the Newark, US department of homeland security, after spending several hours in prison. Baraka remarked,” I didn’t do anything wrong,” and that is true.
Baraka” dedicated trespass and ignored numerous instructions from Homeland Security Investigations to reduce himself” from the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, according to Alina Habba, Trump’s appointment as interim US counsel in New Jersey.
The Trump presidency and Baraka are at odds with one another over the 1, 000-bed Delaney Hall service, which GEO Group runs. Baraka, who is running for governor in the Democratic primary in New Jersey second quarter, has repeatedly protested at the center, and the city has filed a US lawsuit to stop it. He claims that GEO Group profited from Trump’s immigration raids.
