Pope Leo XIV signals intention to walk in Francis' footsteps

In a cardinals conference on Saturday, recently elected Pope Leo XIV praised his predecessor, Pope Francis, and declared that he would follow in the late pope’s footsteps, indicating the progression of the late pope’s fairly progressive agenda. Leo made his first address to a cardinal since becoming the 267th pope on Thursday. Given the large number of cardinal participating and the richness of their backgrounds, the Chicago-born bishop Robert Francis Prevost was elected in what was described as a small conference. The conference is a key affair, but cardinal who took part claimed Leo won with more than 100 votes, far more than the 89 needed for the expected two-thirds majority.

What was Francis ‘ opinion of Leo? Leo praised the late Francis ‘ commitment to the” sober simplicity of life.” According to a record of his talk to the College of Cardinals that the Vatican has made available, the pontiff said,” Let us get up this valuable legacy and remain on the trip, inspired by the same hope that is born of faith.” He cited the late priest’s call for” courageous and trusting speech with the modern world in its various components and experiences.” Francis ‘ 12-year church frequently received criticism from traditional cardinals for what they perceived as his watering down of the church’s philosophy on issues like women’s authority and LGBTQ+ Catholics. Before being elected pontiff, Leo spent the majority of his spiritual career in Peru as a preacher before being made saint in 2023 and serving as a senior Vatican official. Why did the pope pick Leo as his brand? Leo as his papal title was a tribute to Pope Leo XIII, a 19th-century bishop known for promoting social justice and fair give for workers in the midst of the industrial revolution, according to the new bishop. According to Leo XIV, the Catholic Church has take the lead in protecting employees, especially from artificial intelligence threats. Leo argued that AI presented “new difficulties for the defense of human dignity, fairness, and labor.” The two-hour conference between the new pope and the chiefs took a different format. Leo opened the ground after his determined address for any cardinal to comment rather than making a speech and anticipating the priests to just listen. The attendees were given the opportunity to express their opinions and concerns during the meeting regarding the issues facing the chapel. European Cardinal Sean Brady told the Reuters reports company,” He listened quite cautiously, but he knows he’s going to have to make the choices.” ” But we’re below to assist him.”
