Turkish Tufts student returns to Boston after ICE detention

A Greek scholar from Tufts University in Massachusetts, who was released from a Louisiana immigration detention centre on Friday, has returned to Boston and has pledged to fight her case in court. A PhD student named Rumeysa Ozturk was detained for more than six months after being detained by immigration officials close to the school in March. Ozturk had co-authored an open newspaper criticizing Tufts ‘ response to student demonstrators who demanded that the school “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide,” disclose its assets, and withdraw from businesses with ties to Israel. She said,” I lost both my freedom and my schooling during a critical time for my graduate studies in the last 45 times.

However, Ozturk expressed her gratitude for your assistance, kindness, and compassion in her statement,” I have faith in the British system of justice.” According to US District Judge William Sessions, she was released without any limitations and that she was not a flight risk or a hazard to the area. Other than the op-ed, Lessons claimed that the position had not provided any evidence as to why Ozturk was detained. Attorneys for Zoturk claim that her arrest and detention were unlawful in order to punish her for exercising her First Amendment rights and prevent individuals from speaking out. Ozturk was joined by her constitutional staff and two Democrat lawmakers upon her return to Massachusetts. Senator Edward Markey remarked,” Now is a fantastic time as we welcome you back, Rumeysa.” Since late March, more than 1, 000 foreign students have been reportedly received with their permits revoked or their authorized standing terminated at US colleges, universities, and school systems.” You have made millions and millions of people across our nation so proud of your fight,” it is said. The presidency of Donald Trump has taken a hard line line toward pro-Palestinian engagement as part of its wider efforts to combat racism.
