UN experts warned on Wednesday that women and girls in Sudan, whose war-ravaged country, are the targets of group rape, sexual enslavement, and killings, particularly from the perspective of armed forces. Since April 15th, 2023, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ( RSF ) have been fighting Sudan’s army, in a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, the displacement of more than 13 million people, and what the UN refers to as one of the worst humanitarian disasters in history. Women and girls are especially vulnerable in the midst of the destruction, according to a group of nine separate UN experts, who are exposed to the dangers of crew rape, physical slavery, trafficking, and forced marriage. The terrible reports of physical violence, kidnappings, and killings involving women and children, including those in displacement camps, show a rigorous and terrible campaign against the least-protected in Sudanese society, they said in a statement. According to the experts, including the exclusive rapporteurs on violence against women and girls, torture, and modern forms of slavery,” Physical crime continues to be used carefully as a weapon of war in Sudan.” So far this year, at least 330 cases of conflict-related sexual assault have been documented. They warned that a number of traumatized survivors were known to possess committed murder, and the actual number is undoubtedly much higher. The affirmation stated that” Survivors are exceedingly and openly considering suicide as a way to flee the ongoing horrors of the conflict.” These “harrowing accounts underscore the magnitude of the mental health problems among women and girls,” according to the professionals, who are mandated by the UN Human Rights Council but who do not speak on behalf of the UN. They also reflect, according to them,” the lack of violence, support, and attention that offenders enjoy, especially in areas where assistance systems have fully collapsed.” The researchers also referred to “many accounts of widespread forced disappearances of women and girls in areas controlled by the RSF, with some believed to have been abducted for physical servitude and exploitation,” according to the professionals. In the wake of the decline of security systems, sufferers are taken from movement settings, markets, and shelters, according to the statement. The “horrible level of crime that women and girls continue to experience is disturbing evidence of the decline in protections for women and girls during times of turmoil and normalization of such murder,” according to authorities. The global community must intervene right away to stop the tide.
