Man who stabbed author Salman Rushdie faces sentencing in New York
Salman Rushdie was stabbed in 2022 by Hadi Matar.

The man who stabbed Salman Rushdie in the eye on a New York presentation level in 2022 is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. The author is blind in one eye. In February, a judge found Hadi Matar, 27, innocent of rape and attempted murder. Jason Schmidt, the district attorney for Chautauqua County, said he will ask for the maximum sentence for the next man’s injury on stage with the writer and the maximum sentence for the attack on August 12, 2022. Because both survivors were hurt in the same incident, he said, the words may go back and forth simultaneously. According to the attorney, Rushdie is not anticipated to go back to judge for his assailant’s punishment. The 77-year-old writer was the key see during the test, telling how he believed he was dying when a masked intruder plunged a weapon into his head and body more than a hundred times as he was being introduced at the Chautauqua Institution to discuss author security. Rushdie spent more than three weeks at a rehab facility in New York City and 17 days in a Pennsylvania doctor. In his 2024 memoir,” Knife,” the author of” Midnight’s Children,”” The Moor’s Last Sigh,” and” Victory City” detailed his recovery. A national trial is the next step for Matar on terrorism-related costs. The second test is anticipated to focus on the more complex issue of purpose, whereas the first trial focused primarily on the specifics of the knife attack itself. Officials claimed Matar, a US resident, was trying to carry out a decades-old judgment, or rule calling for Rushdie’s death when he attempted to kill him at the summertime retreat about 112.6 miles south of Buffalo. According to federal prosecutors, Mahatra believed the Fatwa, which was first issued in 1989, was supported by the Lebanon-based violent party Hezbollah and endorsed in a 2006 speech by the team’s secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the ruler of Iran, issued the judgment shortly after Rushdie’s book,” The Satanic Verses,” which some Islam find profane. Rushdie hid for ages before Iran’s announcement to stop imposing his freedom of movement for the past 25 times. In a three-count accusation, Mohammed pleaded not guilty to the charges of engaging in violence outside of his country and providing material aid to Hezbollah. Matar approaches the seated Rushdie from behind and reach around him with a knife, according to footage captured by the festival’s devices and shown in the test. As the crowd moans and cries, Rushdie is seen walking and stumbling for a few ways with Matar hanging on, swinging and stabbing until they both drop and are surrounded by bystanders who rush in to distinguish them. He is seen raising his arms and rising from his chair.

Salman Rushdie, the artist, attacked and stabbed Salman Rushdie on level in New York.

After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury in Matar’s second trial delivered their verdict.
