According to a recent report from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, nearly 650 school students and student organizations have faced punishment or inquiries from officials for their appearance of their constitutional rights between 2020 and 2024.

In a media launch, the party stated in a press release that 63 percent of the 1, 014 attempts to punish individuals for speech and expression over the past five years resulted in” some sort of operational punishment.”

FIRE said it will add more cases as they develop a collection that records the incidents.

The study examines officials ‘ attempts to investigate, judge, or punish pupils and student organizations at American colleges and universities for expressive behavior that should be protected by the First Amendment.

According to FIRE Chief Research Advisor Sean Stevens,” This is intolerable coming from people whose job is to provide college students and maintain that their rights are protected.” Their work should be to defend students ‘ freedom of speech, no rocket them.

According to FIRE, one of the main findings of the study is:

•” The issue spans beliefs. Most kids are targeted from their left when speaking about race, but students who speak out about the Gaza War are more likely to get targeted from their straight.

•” Among the worst sanctions were the arrests of 72 learners or groups, 55 expelled, lost revenue for student groups, or were otherwise expelled from their universities, and 19 more who were unenrolled under confusing circumstances. In one instance, a student was forced to sleep in his car after being kicked out of his residence hall by his universities. A pupil was suspended for sending a review about mental health to his peers in another.

•” Students for Justice in Palestine ( 75 incidents ), Turning Point USA ( 65 incidents ), and College Republicans ( 58 incidents ) were the most frequently targeted or punished student groups.”

Race and the Israeli-Palestinian issue are the two key subjects that prompted inquiries, according to FIRE.

Less: 120 campus-related incidents that were canceled in 2024 are a year in.
