Since my early days, high class drama has advanced tremendously. I’m not talking about anything as esoteric and edgy as” Equus,” as wild as” Hair,” or as ambiguous as” Waiting for Godot,” but rather high school drama teachers and their students occasionally leave the “oldies but goodies” for slightly different ground. In this case, Fannin County High School in Georgia is the subject. The crisis group decided to put on Arthur Miller’s” The Furnace” production. And to be honest,” The Crucible” has had more than enough appearances on high school stages over the years, but it is a far cry from Danny Zuko and” Grease.” The play is about the Salem Witch Trials, and it was created as an allegory for the McCarthy testing in the 1950s during the Red Scare or Red Menace, if you prefer.
